The kukui nut or candle nut is the official emblem of the Hawaiian Island of Molokai. The most popular of all of the lei hua (seed leis), the lei kukui is created by many hours of sanding and polishing for each nut to achieve a high gloss sheen.
The finished nuts are available in several colors from blond to brown to black, patterned with grooves or polished smooth. The polished nuts are strung together in varied lengths including the ever popular lei size of chest length.
The kukui tree has a wide variety of other uses such as, laxative, shampoo, skin moisturizer, lamp oil, and food flavoring to name a few.
