The official Ceremonial flag of Argentina features 3 equal horizontal stripes of light blue, white and light blue with the yellow Sun of May in the center. A second Argentinian national flag does not include the Sun of May and is considered the Ornamental flag.

In 1812, during the Argentine War of Independence, it was observed that the flags of both forces were using the same colors, Spain's yellow and red, and a new flag was created and declared the national flag in 1816. The Sun of May is based upon an engraving on the first Argentine coin of a sun with 16 straight and 16 wavy sunbeams and was added to the flag in 1818.
