Built in 1817, Old Baldy Light is the oldest lighthouse still standing in North Carolina. The octagonal brick tower is 110 feet tall and is distinguished by it's stucco plaster exterior, now mottled from years of repairs.

In addition, the light is positioned off center to accommodate the ladder ascending the last few feet to the lantern room.

The lighthouse was built 4 miles from the eastern end of the island to guide ships past Frying Pan Shoals at the mouth of the Cape Fear river. The location, along with inadequate height and illumination made the light unsuccessful in safely guiding ships. It now stands as a day beacon and symbol of Bald Head Island.
