The official flag of Brazil is a dark blue disc with the national motto, Ordem e Progresso, in green on a curved white band across the center and 27 five-point white stars of five different sizes, predominantly in the southern hemisphere of the disc. The blue disc is centered within a yellow diamond shape on a green field. The Brazilian flag was adopted in 1889 after the proclamation of the Republic and is based upon the imperial flag of 1822.

The stars represent the Brazilian states and the Federal District and portray how the stars would appear above Rio de Janeiro on a celestial globe at 8:37 AM on November 15, 1889. The white band and motto, meaning "Order and Progress", is symbolic of the equator with one star, representing the State of Para, placed above and the remaining star below. The green and yellow colors, inherited from the imperial flag, represent the dynasties of Pedro I and Maria Leopoldina of Austria.
