Rope Letters for Names, Phrases, & Signs
Tie it all together with rope letter signs, phrases, and names at country-western, lake & lodge, camping, and nautical themed events, receptions, and dinner parties.
With a little glue and cornstarch, you can turn everyday jute twine into “Happy Birthday”, “Bon Voyage”, or “Just Hitched” for another unique detail. Or make each of your guests feel extra special with rope name seat assignment “place cards”.
Materials Used
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 4 oz white school glue
- Wax or parchment paper
- Jute twine
Step 1: Optionally, write out the names or phrases on wax or parchment paper.
Step 2: Mix cornstarch, glue, and warm water until smooth.
Step 3: Saturate twine in glue mixture.
Step 4: Remove excess glue from twine with fingers, and write out words and/or names. You may need to add extra pressure and glue to areas that overlap.
Step 5: Let dry for 12 hours. You may need to trim dried glue on edges with utility knife.
Why Seat Assignments?
I'm a big fan of seat assignments, even for a table of four at a restaurant, and here's why:
My secret to encouraging spontaneous and engaging conversation is to always seat partners, spouses, best friends directly across from each other.
This does 4 things:
- Partners speaking across the table will include surrounding guests in the dialogue between them.
- It also avoids (unintentionally) excluding everyone else from their conversation.
- Plus, visibly looking at a supporting partner will add a level of social comfort.
- In addition, guests are more likely to talk to people that they don't know very well when seated next to them.
Whether you assign seats or not, rope words and phrases are an easy-to-do feature you can add to your collection of party decorating tricks!
