This unofficial variant flag of Germany features 3 equal horizontal bands of black, red, and gold from top to bottom.  The first flag was adopted in 1848 when the feudal states were to trying to unite.  Although the union did not occur, the flag was established using the colors of the German soldier uniforms during the Napoleonic wars. The official flag of Germany has been changed through history, including the Nazi flag and a separate flag for East Germany, however the original flag is once again the national German flag.
