I’ve always loved that moment when a campsite first comes to life. There’s excitement in the air, the thrill of discovery, and the deep satisfaction of putting some kind of order into nature’s beautiful, chaotic sprawl.
You pitch the tent, stack the firewood, stake your claim—and just like that, a wild, untamed patch of forest becomes home.

That’s exactly what I wanted this centerpiece to evoke: the joy and expectancy of creating something structured and intentional right in the middle of nature’s overlapping color, texture, and whimsy.
It’s a celebration of exploration—of shaping a space where stories can unfold and memories take root. And the best part? You don’t have to brave a single mosquito to get there.

Here’s what you’ll need to bring this back-to-nature tablescape to life.

The Heart of the Table
At the center of it all is a flickering lantern, perched atop stacked birch wood rounds like the glowing heart of a freshly built campfire.
But the real scene-stealer? A hatchet embedded firmly into a birch slice—not just placed, but planted. As if someone just split a log, wiped their brow, and wandered off for s’mores.
It’s a visual moment that tells a silent story. This table wasn’t styled. It was lived in.
Birch Log & Butterflies

- Start with the birch log tealight candle holder.
- Cut five floral foam squares to fit into the openings, and hot glue in place.
- Add sprigs of Queen Anne’s lace to each block—mix the colors for wildflower whimsy.
- Perch three colorful butterflies along the log like they just fluttered in to say hello.
Prep the Scene

- Lay down a red and black buffalo check runner over a black tablecover.
- I like felt as a tablecover because it’s easy to work with and won’t wrinkle.
- Fill the weathered pail with a bundle of colorful wildflowers.
- Embed a hatchet into a 5–6" birch disk slice so it stands tall.
- I tried a smaller slice—it split in half like firewood, so go with the sturdier one!
Build the Story

- Artfullly arrange the core pieces:
- Hurricane lantern
- Hatchet in wood
- Bundle of birch logs
- Burlap-wrapped pine tree
- Weathered wildflower pail
- Birch log with butterflies
- Pine cone candle
- Tree bark pillar candle
- Carved wood mushroom
- Ceramic birch tree owl
- Sisal owl ornament
- Once everything’s in place, tuck in cut pieces of Norfolk pine and pine cone sprays.
- Add finishing touches:
- A bumblebee with polka-dot wings clipped to the pine tree.
- A blue jay perched on the log bundle.
Guest Experience

Each place setting is a mix of rugged charm and warm hospitality.
- Buffalo plaid napkins are folded into clean squares and topped with “Camping – Nature Awaits” plates.
- But my favorite detail? A wood canoe ornament at every seat.
- Ornaments as favors are my go-to—they quietly recall the occasion every holiday season.
- I still think of a girl I barely knew every Christmas when I unwrap the ornament she gave me.
Reverse View

The reverse view continues the narrative—owls still watch, butterflies still flutter, and the campsite charm wraps around with intention.
