Step 1: Make Wire Supports
- To create this fisherman's centerpiece, we'll start with wire supports for the bass.
- For the front, we'll use a 4.75" long support for a bass swimming downward.
- And for the reverse, we'll use a 6" support for a bass swimming upward.
- Measure, cut, & straighten 14-gauge wire to make supports.
- Cut one length of 14-gauge wire, 14 inches or longer.
- We'll cut it into two pieces after straightening.
Straighten & Paint
- To straighten the wire, secure one end of the wire in a vise.
- If you don't have a vise, you can attach the wire to a stationary object.
- Chuck the other end of the wire into a drill.
- Turn on the drill at slow or moderate speed.
- Keep tension on the wire while it is spinning.
- Spin until straight and remove.
- Sand & paint the wire section & small glass floral container with acrylic thalo-blue paint.
- We used a square votive candle holder as a container for our center florals.
- When dry, cut the straightened wire into two supports: 4.75 and 6 inches.
Step 2: Position Elements
- Sand one side of the 7-8" birch disk slice.
- Separate wax leaf & foxtail (for center arrangement) into 2-3 stems each.
- Insert wire supports between the pectoral fins of each fish to obscure entry.
- Angle the fish on the 4.75" support swimming downward, and the 6" support upward.
- Mark positions of fish supports & wax plant leaf stems on wood disk base in pencil.
- Use the wax plant stems to camouflage the wire supports.
- Drill holes: 3/32" for wire supports & 1/16" for plant stems.
- To avoid drilling through, mark 3/4" depth with tape on the drill bit; disks are 1" thick.
- Place all elements on the base to test positions; trim supports to adjust fish height, if desired.
- If you need to reposition the fish or stems, drill new holes; they won't be noticeable.
- Remove elements & set aside until ready to assemble.
Step 3: Add Color
- Create a distinctive point of interest in your display with a splash of vibrant blue.
- Mix acrylic thalo-blue paint & water to make a wash.
- Apply wash unevenly to the top of the sanded wood disk to mimic the movement of water.
- Add a few strokes with paint on your brush; no artistic ability required (as shown).
Step 4: Assemble Centerpiece
- Add floral foam to glass container and assemble elements on wood disk base.
- First position center glass container & fish, then arrange aquatic grass & foxtail stems to fill the space.
- By using a center glass container, you can add table numbers or signage and change florals for different seasons & events.
- Alternatively, you could drill holes and glue the center florals directly into the disk base.
- Super-glue supports & stems and, optionally, Velcro or hot glue center container & "Gone Fishing" ornaments in place.
- Glue clusters of blue glass gem disks on the birch slice base to simulate water reflections.
Set the Scene
- This bass fishing centerpiece is easily adapted to round or rectangular tables.
- Start with a green & black check runner over a burlap base.
- Place the fishing scene in the center with a 3-tier birch tealight holder on each side.
- Weave the fishing bobber garland down through the candleholders & centerpiece.
Guest Experience
- Create fisherman silhouettes with black napkins to coordinate with the green & black runner.
- Fold napkins using the candlestick style (super easy), but fold into quarters instead of halves before rolling to reduce the height.
- Cover with the fisherman's vest ornament and pull the napkin partially through the top.
- Finally, take a seat and assess the experience from your guest's point of view.
Reverse View
- Adjust as necessary for a different bass fishing scene on the reverse side.
Add excitement and transform any gathering into a standout occasion with unique and thoughtful details.
