The original Cape Lookout lighthouse was lit in 1812 to alert ships to dangerous shoals and the Gulf Stream, but it's lights were too dim and the lighthouse was relocated, rebuilt, and re-lit in 1859 in its current location.
It went through much damage in the Civil War, and has been through many bouts of repair and disrepair. Its iconic black diamond pattern has been constant, however, and is the traditional maritime denotation of danger.
