Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Decoupage Napkins for Candles and Coasters
Unleash your creativity and flex your artistic muscles with this simple DIY project for customizing candles to match any party theme.
Even if you don't consider yourself "crafty" this is an easy way to coordinate your napkins and home decor.
Materials Used
- Paper napkin
- Pillar candle
- Parchment paper
- Heat source: Heat gun or small iron
Steps to Decorate Candle
- Select your napkin and candle type.
- I suggest the beverage size napkin on a 6-inch pillar candle.
- Unfold the napkin and iron out the creases.
- Separate the napkin layers and use the top ply only.
- Adjust the napkin so the artwork fits on the candle like you want.
- Trim off excess.
- Wrap the candle with the napkin and then the parchment paper on top.
- With your heat source go slowly over the napkin until you notice the wax melting slightly.
- Move your heat source slowly and evenly over the candle until the napkin covers the whole candle and smoothly bonds with the wax.
- You may have to touch up spots, and be sure the edges are secure and smooth.
Now you have a beautiful candle that matches your decor!
Candle or Drink Coaster
Materials Used
- 5" Wood craft square tile
- For a drink coaster, use a 3" Wood craft square tile
- Glue stick
- Sanding stick or very fine sandpaper
- Beverage size napkin
Steps for Coaster
- Separate the napkin layers and use the top ply only.
- Adjust the napkin so the artwork fits on the wood square like you want.
- Leave a 1/2" overhang on all sides and trim off excess.
- Remove the napkin and apply glue to cover the square completely to edges.
- Center napkin over the glued surface of the square.
- Gently smooth napkin from the center to the edges.
- TIP: Make sure your hands are clean before smoothing the napkin.
- Gently file off napkin around the edges with the sanding stick or sandpaper.
That's all it takes to create a pad to coordinate with your pillar candle and beverage napkins.
Use this same technique to make coasters with 3" wood tiles. Seal with Modge-Podge to make them water-resistant.
In addition to adding unique details to your home decor or party theme, candles decorated with napkins also make wonderful one-of-a-kind gifts for the holiday season.
Have fun!
