The official flag of New Zealand is four 5-point red stars, of different sizes and outlined in white, in the formation of the constellation of Crux offset to the fly side on a blue field and features the United Kingdom Union Jack in the canton. The present day flag was approved in 1902 and is adapted from the design of the first flag of New Zealand (introduced in 1867) that was based upon the British blue ensign maritime flag.

Prior to the blue ensign, the very first flag was adopted in 1834 after a New Zealand trading ship was seized in Sydney for sailing without a flag. New Zealand was not a British colony at the time and the flag of the United Tribes of New Zealand was designed, then adopted at a meeting of Maori chiefs at Waitangi.
