Add a touch of charm and tradition to your nautical theme event with a miniature replica of North Carolina's Ocracoke Island lighthouse on the outer banks. Attractively patterned with exquisite detail, this statuette is sure to light up the party!

Built in 1823, the white, conical, brick and mortar tower is 76 feet tall and is the oldest operating light station in North Carolina.  The tower was built to mark the inlet to Palmlico Sound and access to several inland ports.

Ocracoke is best known as the favorite anchorage of Edward Teach, better known as the ruthless pirate called Blackbeard.  Blackbeard's intention to use the island as a pirate haven moved the citizens to appeal to the Governor of Virginia to help.

Lieutenant Robert Maynard of the Royal Navy was sent with two small sloops.  After one sloop ran aground, Blackbeard gained on the sloop Maynard was aboard.  The troops were ordered below deck and Blackbeard led the charge aboard what appeared to be a deserted ship to be met with Maynard's pistol to his face.

The fight raged and Blackbeard suffered more than thirty major wounds and fell dead at Maynard's feet.  Blackbeard's head was cut off and attached to the bowsprit and his headless body was thrown overboard, where it reportedly swam around the sloop 3 times before sinking.  (From Lighthouse Friends).
