- 14" 1x4 wood board
- 14-gauge galvanized wire
- Turquoise spray or acrylic paint
- Gold spray paint
- Glittered gold spray paint (optional)
- Glittered turquoise tulle - 24" x 60"
Step 1: Plants & Base
- Arrange the plants to determine their positions.
- Cut excess stems, leaving about 3/4" for inserting into the board.
- Cut the sea-grass & fan-coral floral stems into 2 pieces each to keep the overall height below 15".
Prepare Wood Base
- Cut a 14" length of 1x4 board.
- Sand the edges to smooth rough areas.
- Draw a line down the center of the board lengthwise to show the position of the turquoise tulle as water.
- With the board below the plant layout, mark plant placement & drill hole sizes.
- Use the center line to show which side of tulle-water to place each plant--facing front or reverse.
- Add the tulle-water support positions on the center line, 1.75" from each end.
- Note: We also added the 2nd piece of fan coral to be placed facing the reverse side (not shown).
- Drill holes and test fit with supports & plants.
Step 2: Wire Supports
- Measure, cut, & straighten 14-gauge wire to make supports.
- Tulle-water: Cut two 14-gauge wire supports, 18 inches or longer.
- Angelfish: Cut one 14-gauge wire support, 10 inches or longer.
Straighten
- To straighten each section, secure one end of the wire in a vise.
- If you don't have a vise, you can attach the wire to a stationary object.
- Chuck the other end of the wire into a drill.
- Turn on the drill at slow or moderate speed.
- Keep tension on the wire while it is spinning.
- Spin until straight and remove.
Paint & Install
- Sand & paint the wire supports turquoise to match the tulle-water.
- Cut the angelfish support into two 3.5-inch pieces.
- Paint the base gold, then finish with a coat of glitter gold (optional).
- Glue the 14-gauge tulle-water supports into the base.
- Ensure the supports are relatively straight and slightly wider apart at the top.
- The extra width at the top will add more slack to the tulle between supports.
- Note: If your drill holes go through the board, make sure the wire supports are recessed on the bottom to avoid damaging the table or linens.
Step 3: Tulle Water
- Cut a piece of glittered turquoise tulle to measure 24" x 60".
- Cut each 60-inch side in a zig-zag pattern, 5" wide & 12" long, to create jagged edges.
- Fold the tulle in half and drape over the supports.
- Push the supports through the center line fold with half on each side.
Attach Tulle
- Measure about 3-4" up one side of the tulle.
- Pinch together 1/2" of tulle and push the supports through.
- Repeat for the other side.
- Alternate sides until reaching the top.
Secure Tulle
- Lay the centerpiece on its side.
- Adjust tulle along supports for the desired look & height.
- Apply white glue to a few points of contact to hold it in place.
- Allow to dry.
Step 4: Plants & Shells
- Install & glue plants into place.
- Arrange & glue sea shells to wood base.
Step 5: Angelfish
- Glue one of the 3.5" wire supports into the inward-facing side of an angelfish.
- Thread the support through plants and tulle at the desired position.
- Hot glue the angelfish with the support into place on the display.
- Attach a second angelfish on the opposite side, at the other end of the support.
- Hot glue the angelfish into place.
- Repeat the process for the other angelfish pair.
Step 6: Trim Supports
- Trim off the wire water supports below the top of the tulle.
- And there you have it! Your Angelfish Coral Reef centerpiece is ready to dazzle your guests!
Set the Scene
- Start with a runner of turquoise satin fabric down the center of a white tablecloth base.
- Lay pectin shell garlands on each side of the angelfish centerpiece.
- Add metallic sealife relief votive candleholders.
- Scatter seashells on and around the centerpice to blend the base into the scene.
Place Settings
- Create a mini reef scene at each place setting.
- Fold seagrass-green napkins into the shape of fan coral.
- Mirror the shimmering effect of water with turquoise bead necklaces as napkin rings.
- Finish with a bright orange sprig of coral cut from a second spray.
Reverse View
- Adjust as necessary for a delightful underwater scene on the reverse side
