This centerpiece was supposed to feature boats. Then the whales showed up, brought dolphins, and kicked off a full-blown undersea takeover.
What emerged was a whimsical ocean scene full of driftwood waves, glinting bubbles, and just the right splash of surprise.

This centerpiece may look like a coastal fantasy, but it’s surprisingly simple to create.

Design in Motion

This centerpiece began with boat trays sailing across driftwood waves in soft ocean hues. Lovely in theory—awkward in reality. The boats didn’t float my boat.
But the painted driftwood garland had so much potential. Once I swapped in whale tails, the scene transformed—suddenly I had whales diving, waves rolling, and a serene ocean story unfolding down the table.
I added silver bead garland for sparkle and snipped the nets off some mini glass buoys to make them cheerful, shiny baubles instead.
Finally, I tucked in blue dolphins for movement—or you may want to use a body-surfing mermaid if you're feeling cheeky.
Here's the full step-by-step breakdown.
Paint Risers

Start by making simple risers to give the whale tails some variation in height.
- Sand three 3–4" birch wood disc slices.
- Spray paint them matte white.
- Use two under the middle whale tail and one under the right-hand tail.
Lay the Foundation

- Begin with a white tablecloth to keep things crisp.
- Fold a shimmering mint green fabric runner to about 15 inches wide and lay it down the center.
- Then, fold & scrunch a strip of glittered aqua tulle—about 48 inches long and 13 inches wide.
- Place it on top to create a sparkling ocean effect.
Set the Scene

Now comes the fun part:
- Place your whale tails roughly in position.
- Weave in painted driftwood garlands, starting from the center and adjusting the pieces to simulate waves.
- Add your painted risers under the tails for height variation.
- Tuck dolphins (or a mermaid!) between the tails to create visual movement and interest.
- Wind a silver bead garland across the top of the driftwood to evoke sunlit bubbles.
- Cut the netting off your mini glass buoys, then secure them in place using Velcro dots for shiny spots of color.
- Hang curtain string lights behind white sheer drapes for a dreamy, underwater glow.
Guest Experience

Echo the centerpiece at each seat:
- Fold cornflower blue cloth napkins into vertical bow-ties, mimicking a whale tail.
- Secure with silver bead necklaces—a fun little favor for guests and a nod to the centerpiece’s sparkle.

And, the magic continues from the back--it’s a 360° ocean story.
