The Story Behind the Scene
Let’s be honest—everyone and their brother has already done the birdcage-and-flowers routine. Lovely? Sure. But you're not here for something everyone has done. You're here for something that flaps its wings a little harder—something with imagination, color, and maybe just a touch of irreverence.
So I asked myself a very serious question: What if birds ruled the world?
They wouldn’t be trapped in cages—that’s for sure. They’d be the ones doing the decorating. And maybe, just maybe, they’d have fish as pets. (I know. Just go with me.)
So I gave it a go. I placed a sequined goldfish inside the birdcage. It was fun… until it wasn’t. From a distance, you couldn’t really tell what you were looking at. The fish just sort of... disappeared.
To fix that, I added bold blue tulle—like water. It made the fish stand out, but more importantly, it made the metallic gold cages practically glow. Their lines and symmetry suddenly felt intentional and striking.
And that’s when I realized: the fish weren’t the stars of this show—the color was. So I set the fish free and let the tulle take over. And just like that, the story evolved. This wasn't about fish anymore. This was about bold choices, whimsical worlds, and gilded drama at the center of the table.
Paint the Candlesticks

- Collect a mix of pillar and taper candle holders—glass, wood, metal, ceramic—all welcome here.
- You’ll find candlesticks galore at thrift stores and Goodwill—like treasure just waiting for a metallic gold upgrade.
- Spray them gold for a cohesive, regal look.
- Use shorter candlesticks for the larger bird cages to keep them stable and steady.
Make the Bird Perches

- Cut a 7/8" square of floral foam and push it into the top of a taper candlestick.
- Trim the corners if needed to fit snugly.
- Insert a sprig of faux Queen Anne’s lace into the foam.
- Add a foam bird by inserting the floral wire pick.
- Optionally, use hot glue for extra hold.
Build the Bird Cages

- Center each large birdcage over a pair of wood craft rectangles or use a wood disc for small birdcages.
- This increases the surface area on the bottom of the cage, making it easier to glue securely to the pedestal.
- From inside the cage, hot glue another disc or squares to sandwich the cage frame between the wood pieces.

- Create a platform on each candlestick with a wood disc to glue the birdcage.
- For taper candlesticks, hot glue a 7/8" floral foam cube to the center of another disc.
- Then, glue it into the candlestick.
- For pillar candlesticks, hot glue a wood disc directly on top.
- Optionally, use a craft wood rectangle for the large bird cages.
Set the Scene

- For each bird cage, fold a length of tulle to a width about 1.5× the height of your birdcage.
- Roll into a loose cylinder and place inside the cage.
- Insert your hand into the center of the tulle roll and gently unroll it outward so it rests against the sides of the cage.
- Add a bit of fluffed tulle inside if needed for volume.
- Smooth the top and close the lid.
- Perch butterflies and a few birds on the outside of the cages.
- Hot glue the bird cages to their candlestick pedestals.
- Arrange the birdcage pedestals down the center of your table.
- Finally, weave glittered fern picks between the bases to soften the edges and tie it all together.
Guest Experience

- Gold chargers and brushed gold flatware bring the gleam, echoing the gilded cages without stealing the show.
- White cloth napkins folded like bows add softness and a bit of drama.
- Beaded gold napkin rings? Actually repurposed party bead necklaces—because why not have fun and make it fabulous?
Reverse View

The reverse view continues the narrative--birds still perch, butterflies still flutter, and the color story keeps soaring.

Coordinating Napkins
This isn’t your grandma’s centerpiece (unless she’s really cool). It began with a question, took a few wild turns (goodbye, fish), and landed in a world where birds decorate and gold rules.
Go bold. Ask weird questions. Let your centerpiece tell a story.
Because creativity doesn’t live in the cage—it lives in the escape.
